Camborne was built for the mining and engineering workforce, and its housing still reflects that. Victorian and Edwardian terraces of workers’ housing run around Trelowarren Street, Cross Street and Commercial Street, with Roskear and Tuckingmill adjoining. These are solid granite buildings, and they respond well to being repaired and modernised properly and very badly to being treated like a modern cavity-walled house. Damp handled the wrong way in a solid wall drives moisture further in, which is the single most common thing we are asked to undo here.
Roskear and Tuckingmill fall inside Area A5 of the World Heritage Site, and the Camborne, Roskear and Tuckingmill Townscape Heritage Initiative ran from 2008 to 2016, improving 28 buildings, restoring 8 listed ones and taking 15 off the Buildings at Risk register. The Holman’s No.3 Rock Drill Works on Trevu Road drew around £8m of private investment and came back as the restored Reynolds House with new housing alongside. That programme also produced guidance on upgrading buildings like these for energy efficiency without damaging them, which is the question most Camborne owners actually arrive with.
