Falmouth’s period stock is Georgian townhouses and large detached Victorian villas looking out over the estuary. Woodlane and Florence Terrace are the districts people picture: substantial villas on steep ground, many long since divided into flats, houses in multiple occupation and student lets, with Falmouth University’s Woodlane campus close by. Subdividing one of those, or reversing the job and making it a single home again, is structural work as much as decorative, and the slope decides how the site is run before anything else does.
The old town is a single street that keeps changing its name as it follows the harbour: High Street runs into Market Street, then Church Street, then Arwenack Street and Bar Road. Off it run the opes, the local word for the narrow alleys threading between the buildings, with Upton Slip dropping steeply away from Church Street, and behind the frontages the plots are long, thin and walled. On a job along Arwenack Street, where number 48 is a Grade II* pair of town houses from the 1770s and numbers 35 to 37 are listed too, the scaffold, the deliveries and the route the waste takes out have to be settled before the programme is. Falmouth is a working port as well, so anything facing the water is specified for salt from the start.
