Redruth sits at the heart of the mining World Heritage Site, and its heritage is packed into a small area around Fore Street: eighteenth and nineteenth century granite mining cottages, miners’ terraces and industrial buildings, a great many of them listed or inside the conservation area. The range runs from the terraces up to buildings like The Ladder, the former Passmore Edwards Library, and Krowji, the town’s creative workspace. What nearly all of it has in common is solid granite walling, which wants repointing in the right mortar and damp handled the way the wall was built to handle it. Put a cement mortar and a sealed modern finish on a wall designed to breathe and you trap water inside a building that spent two centuries letting it out.
The town has turned into a case study in reusing old buildings rather than clearing them. Kresen Kernow opened in 2019 inside the derelict former Redruth Brewery, which brewed from around 1792 until 2004, with the brewhouse retained within the new structure. The Buttermarket brought five Grade II listed buildings around a courtyard back into use, relaying granite paving salvaged from the Kresen Kernow site. A £6m High Street Heritage Action Zone, £1.6m of it from Historic England, has been at work on the London Inn at 33 and 34 Fore Street and on the Buttermarket. Converting the upper floors above the shops into homes is live work in this town.
