Builders in St Austell

Family run builders in West Cornwall since 1975.

A Nevitt Construction is a family run builder based in Hayle, working across West Cornwall since 1975. St Austell is the furthest edge of where we go, thirty-five miles east, so it is worth asking early: on the right project the answer is yes, and it is better said plainly than assumed.

Building in St Austell

St Austell was built on china clay, and the town centre is where the money from it went. The Market House of 1844, designed by Christopher Eales and listed Grade II*, anchors a conservation area whose appraisal has been in force since March 2013, and the streets around it — Duke Street, Trevarthian Road, High Cross Street — carry the nineteenth century frontages that go with it. The £1.5m Townscape Heritage scheme that ran here from 2018 put grants into around fourteen historic buildings and reinstated ten shopfronts and signs before it closed, which tells you what this part of town wants from a builder: repair and reinstatement to the original detail, not a modern replacement that photographs well and looks wrong in five years.

Two miles down the hill is Charlestown, which was not a village that grew but one that was built, raised out of the fishing cove of West Polmear between 1792 and 1801 by Charles Rashleigh as a working clay port. It has been a conservation area since 1967, holds 54 listed buildings and a Grade II* harbour of 1790, and sits inside the same mining World Heritage Site as our own harbour at Hayle — so the scrutiny there is the kind we are already used to. Inland the picture inverts completely: West Carclaze Garden Village is putting up to 1,500 homes on worked-out clay ground north of the town, with residents in since 2022. One town, two entirely different jobs.

The work St Austell usually needs

  • Conservation area repair and shopfront reinstatement
  • Heritage-grade work in and around Charlestown
  • New build and plot work in the clay country north of town
  • Extensions and refurbishment of period town houses
Getting to you

About 35 miles from Hayle, roughly fifty minutes — the longest run we make. That is close enough to come and look at the job properly before quoting it, and close enough to be on site when we say we will be.
